GOOK
1.) Does Justin Chon present to the audience a new and insightful perspective on the 1992 riots?
2.) What is the director's purpose in creating a character like Kamilla? What might she symbolically represent?
3.) Here is a film played entirely by an all-minority cast. Do you think Justin Chon succeeded at portraying each group?

1992 Riots
1.) One politician has described the riots of 1992 as “the brutality of the mob, pure and simple.” Another has stated that it was "an indictment of America’s negligence towards inner-city communities and minority groups." How do you make sense of this historical event?
2.) What were the social and economic factors that contributed to the tension between African American and Korean American communities -- resulting in the killing of Latasha Harlins and the riots?
3.) Elaine Kim says, "[The] media played a major role in exacerbating the damage and ill will toward Korean Americans, first by spotlighting tensions between African Americans and Koreans above all efforts to work together…and second by exploiting racist stereotypes of Koreans as unfathomable aliens, this time wielding guns on rooftops and allegedly firing wildly into crowds" (Kim 275). Is the media to be blamed for what transpired between African Americans and Koreans? Do you think the media has changed in how they present tension between groups in society?

1. What does your poem reveal about the Hmong narrative? What are some of its themes? What meaning can you decipher from it?
2. Does the poem require you to understand Hmong culture and traditions in order for you to "get" the poem? What lines/words made it difficult for you to understand the poem? What lines/words made the poem more accessible to you?
